On Sunday, 24-year-old British driver Lando Norris stood defeated on the podium. He knew he had a shot at victory at Silverstone, but was outperformed in a thrilling race by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Former world champion Jenson Button believes Norris needs to better manage his emotions. “Don’t be so hard on yourself,” is his advice.

Norris’ tire choice was primarily what let him down on Sunday. The McLaren driver opted for a stint on the softs in the final stages of the British Grand Prix, hoping to challenge race leader Lewis Hamilton for the win. The softest compound turned out to be the wrong choice – Norris was overtaken by Max Verstappen, who drove to second place on the hard tire.

“I blame myself for not making the right decisions,” a distraught Lando Norris said after the race. The young driver proved to be his own harshest critic. “I hate it. I hate ending up in this position and having to make excuses for not doing my job well enough.”

‘He’s Being Too Hard on Himself’

Former world champion Jenson Button advises Lando Norris to be less critical – such negative feelings could only hinder him. “Lando needs to be a bit careful with his emotions,” Button said during a Sky Sports broadcast. “He’s been too hard on himself in the last few races.”

“We all know how important it is to have a positive mindset,” said Button, who was crowned world champion in 2009. “He’s so talented; it would be a shame if he just stayed stuck in that negativity. Moreover, you don’t want to show your competitors that you’re so down. That’s a weakness you don’t want to display.”
