Antonio Pérez Garibay, father of former Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez, recently shared insights about his son’s future. The Mexican driver, who raced for Red Bull for four years, was let go after the 2024 season in favor of Liam Lawson. According to Pérez senior, his son had received offers from other teams, but he only wanted to continue racing if he had a chance at the title.

After a particularly disappointing season, Sergio Pérez was dismissed by Red Bull in December. The 35-year-old driver had previously signed a two-year contract with the Austrians, but the collaboration was prematurely terminated. Since then, Checo has been relatively quiet. Rumors suggest he might make a comeback with Cadillac’s new Formula 1 team, but nothing has been confirmed so far. Meanwhile, father Antonio Pérez Garibay promises that something exciting is being worked on behind the scenes.

‘Pérez had opportunities with other teams’

“What Checo is cooking up is something very big for the Mexican fans,” Garibay told ESPN. “They will be very happy, very proud – we hope this will last for many more years.” He emphasized that his son had previously had opportunities to stay in Formula 1, but that he would only return if he had the chance to fight for the championship.””He is only looking forward to returning, to becoming a champion – that’s the only thing missing,” said Garibay. “In other words, he would not return to Formula 1 if he couldn’t become a world champion. So far, he has only finished second in Formula 1 once, something we’ve never had in Mexico before.” Sergio Pérez finished second in the championship in 2023, behind teammate Max Verstappen. According to his father, he had offers to stay in Formula 1 this year, but he turned them down. “He had opportunities with other teams, but they did not offer the level he was looking for. He deserves to fight at the front.”
