As we approach the Italian GP, the official replacement for Lewis Hamilton has been announced. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 18-year-old prodigy from the Mercedes talent pool, will make his Formula 1 debut in 2025. Despite crashing his car during his first free practice with the Silver Arrows, Antonelli, who still needs to obtain his regular driving license, aims to outperform Russell next year.
“That first lap was truly emotional, especially with all the Italian fans in the stands,” Antonelli reflected on his free practice in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. “But then I started to misbehave a bit. Fortunately, I have two more chances, in Mexico and Abu Dhabi.” The young Italian used George Russell’s W15 at Monza, his future teammate at Mercedes.
‘Next year, I want to beat him’
“Russell was far from pleased with my crash, but we get along well and he gives me valuable advice,” Antonelli continued. “But next year, I want to beat him!” Before that happens, however, Antonelli first needs to get his driving license. After Max Verstappen debuted in Formula 1 in 2015 without a pink slip, the FIA has tightened the rules. Therefore, Antonelli has booked a practical exam for the end of the year.
“I don’t have a driving license yet,” confirmed the 18-year-old driver. “I do have a car at home, but it’s quite damaged. It feels a bit strange to know that I’m going to Formula 1 without a driving license, but I just hope that I pass my practical exam in December.” Even if Antonelli fails his exam, there’s a high chance that the FIA will make an exception for the young talent.
