McLaren CEO Zak Brown has revised his initial judgement regarding the first corner incident in the sprint race in Austin. While he seemed to hold Nico Hülkenberg responsible for the chaos that led to both McLarens retiring immediately after the accident, he later retracted this statement.
The incident involved Oscar Piastri being hit from behind by Hülkenberg. The German driver then clipped Lando Norris, which resulted in the end of the race for both McLaren drivers. A costly mistake, but according to Brown, it ultimately wasn’t Hülkenberg’s fault.
“I’ve reviewed it and I think I’ve changed my mind,” Brown told Sky Sports F1. “I can’t really blame Nico for this.” Brown admitted that he reacted in the heat of the moment to what he saw at that time: “I was quite upset by what I saw. A lot of things happened in the first corner, but I don’t think this was Nico’s fault.”
