Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has spoken out about the current contract situation of George Russell. For the time being, Wolff does not seem to be planning to offer Russell a long-term contract, something the British driver is particularly keen on.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff sees no reason to rush in extending George Russell’s contract. According to him, the current situation fits perfectly within the policy that Mercedes has been following for years. “We have never been about long-term contracts,” explains Wolff. “The longest contract we have ever concluded is two years with an option. That’s a kind of Mercedes pattern.”
Wrong Attitude
Wolff finds it logical that Russell has not yet signed a new contract. “We had a 1+1 deal now, and that is something that always has our preference. The drivers are under enormous pressure. But if someone claims to perform better with a multi-year contract, then he has the wrong attitude.”
However, this does not mean that negotiations have come to a halt. According to Wolff, it is mainly practical matters that still need to be arranged. “There are some minor things we still need to discuss, such as how we optimize travel. But those are details.”
