James Vowles, the team principal of Williams, outlines the team’s plans for the remainder of the season. Following the summer break, the team will introduce upgrades, hoping to compete for valuable points once again. But that’s not the only change Vowles intends to implement in his team.
Now that Williams has completed its line-up for 2025 with the addition of Carlos Sainz, the team’s focus shifts back to the current season. Currently, the team ranks ninth in the standings, having secured only four points. According to team principal James Vowles, a significant reason for this low ranking is the overweight FW46.
Williams’ Upcoming Upgrades
Williams is hopeful that a series of upgrades following the summer break will address their current issues. In addition to reducing the weight, the aerodynamics and suspension of the Williams car will also be overhauled. “There are serious signs that we could return to a position where we can fight for points,” says Vowles, optimistically.
However, the Williams team boss remains cautious. “In the world of Formula 1, these are big steps,” Vowles explains. “My hesitation is because you’ve seen how Red Bull had an update and then removed it from the car. Mercedes had an update, but also removed it. You don’t usually see that, teams usually have confidence in what they’re doing.”
Major Changes Ahead for Williams
The British racing team’s agenda includes not only the further development of the FW46. Williams is also simultaneously focusing on the cars for 2025, 2026, and even 2027. “This is a change for Williams. We were used to working only a year ahead or even just on the current year,” the British team boss admits. “As you can imagine, if you do that within the organization, it takes time to adjust.”
