The United States has been waiting for a Formula 1 hero for years, but that hope seems to be in vain time and again. Or is it? In recent years, the sport has rapidly gained popularity in America, with three of its own Grands Prix – Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas – and a growing fan base. But one thing is missing: an American driver who not only participates but wins. However, a new generation of talent is knocking increasingly louder on the door of Formula 1. Which American has what it takes to truly break down that door?

1. Colton Herta (24 years old)

If there is one American driver who belongs in Formula 1 in terms of pure speed, it is Colton Herta. In IndyCar, he has already proven himself as one of the fastest and most spectacular drivers on the grid, with impressive victories and exceptional car control. In 2022, he seemed close to a switch to F1 when AlphaTauri showed interest in giving him a seat, but he just fell short of the required super license. Nevertheless, Herta remains a serious candidate. Michael Andretti has indicated several times that he would like to see Herta in his F1 team. If Cadillac enters Formula 1, this could not only be Herta’s big chance but also the moment when America claims its spot on the F1 grid.

2. Jak Crawford (19 years old)

American talents are rare in the junior classes, but Jak Crawford is an exception. As part of the Red Bull Junior Team, he is in one of the best talent programs in motorsport, from which Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen also emerged. In Formula 2, he has impressed with spectacular podium finishes and daring overtaking maneuvers. In 2025, he continues to compete with DAMS Lucas Oil, aiming to strengthen his position as a top candidate for an F1 seat. With Cadillac’s planned entry into Formula 1 in 2026, he could be an attractive American option. Is he ready for the big step? His talent suggests so.

Other upcoming talent

Beyond these two mega-talents knocking on the door of Formula 1, there is also a group of drivers who are just on the cusp. Bryce Aron, for example, built his career in Europe and participated in the Euroformula Open with Motopark in 2024. Brad Benavides raced a season of Formula 2 in 2023 and returned to the Euroformula Open in 2024, where he immediately became champion. Max Esterson, who started his career in sim racing, made his Formula 3 debut with Jenzer Motorsport in 2024. He scored multiple points and then moved up to Formula 2 with Trident. In 2025, he is driving his first full season in F2.

Three own races, an explosively growing fan base, an American F1 team from 2026 (Cadillac), and the strongest batch of talent in years: everything points to a breakthrough. But who will seize the opportunity? Which American driver will finally push that door open? Or will the American Dream in Formula 1 remain a dream that never becomes reality?
