Last year, Will Buxton made a notable transition from F1TV to FOX Sports, the American broadcaster that has embraced and aims to popularize IndyCar. In the paddock in Austin, the British TV personality doesn’t get a moment’s rest, spending hours catching up with friends, drivers, and acquaintances. “I’ll take a photo with you in a moment, buddy.”

Will Buxton refers to his visit to the American Grand Prix in Austin as a golden opportunity. The Brit no longer belongs to Formula 1’s colorful interior since this year: he is now the face of IndyCar for FOX Sports. The transition, he tells us in the shadow of Ferrari’s garage, has been ‘quite’ pleasing. Buxton was already a big name among enthusiasts in America due to his presence on F1TV, his popularity has only increased since the transfer.

Make no mistake: while Formula 1 may finally have gained a foothold in the new world, in terms of viewership, the series still falls short against IndyCar in America this year. According to Buxton, an average Formula 1 race attracts about 1.1 million viewers on sports channel ESPN, while IndyCar attracts 1.3 million.

“The success of Formula 1 with the recent film featuring Brad Pitt and Drive to Survive is stimulating general interest in open-wheel racing here,” claims the Brit. “The interest is not limited to Formula 1 alone.”

Buxton enjoys being part of Formula 1 again, even if it’s only for four days. It feels like coming home to him. He can’t walk ten meters without being addressed. Drivers stop to shake his hand, colleagues question him about his work in IndyCar. And fans still passionately shout his name from the first floor of the paddock club.

He is still popular with F1 fans, it seems. During the conversation, a boy of about 12 approaches him, looking for an autograph and a photo. “I’m in a conversation right now. But after that, I’ll have all the time for you and I’ll take a photo with you, buddy.” Buxton: “American sports fans are so loyal.” The Brit does want to say one thing to Dutch racing fans. “Do you know how good Rinus Veekay (Van Kalmthout) is? He is one of the best IndyCar drivers. I think it’s great that he’s found a new team. He deserves it: I have high expectations of him for 2026.”
