Despite two consecutive dominant victories by Max Verstappen at the Grand Prix events in Italy and Azerbaijan, former Haas team boss Guenther Steiner remains unconvinced of a true comeback by the Red Bull driver. According to the former Haas team boss, McLaren is simply stronger at the moment, and Verstappen will secure few victories this season.
After several challenging races before the summer break, Max Verstappen has convincingly returned to the top. The Dutchman secured both pole position and victory in Monza and last weekend in Baku. Verstappen was flawless in Azerbaijan, while both McLarens had a mediocre weekend: Oscar Piastri crashed twice, and Lando Norris did not advance beyond seventh place on Sunday. Red Bull’s strong form seems to be back, but not everyone is convinced.
McLaren is Simply Superior
Guenther Steiner has a bleak outlook for Verstappen in the coming weeks. In the Red Flags podcast, he tempered expectations: “I don’t think Max is going to win many more races this year. I think the McLarens will.” According to the former team boss, this is not due to Verstappen himself. “He doesn’t have to do anything wrong, but I think the McLaren is simply a better car. McLaren only had one bad weekend.” However, Steiner is full of praise for Verstappen’s abilities. “We all agree on one thing: Max is the best. No one doubts that,” asserts the Italian. “But I would wait and see how good Red Bull’s updates really are – especially on a normal circuit.”
