What initially seemed to be a rather uneventful year takes an unexpected turn due to Max Verstappen. Five editors and three columnists share their personal memories of Verstappen in 2025 in a short contribution. Part 8 (conclusion): reporter Gerard Bos on a down-to-earth, always realistic Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen and the Hungarian Grand Prix prove to be a poor match in 2025. During the worst sporting weekend of the year, we speak to each other briefly on several occasions. Things are not going well in Budapest, with the RB21 proving to be a non-starter: eighth in qualifying, ninth in the race. “We’re not going to win any more races this year,” he declares to the media. The day before, he had expressed similar sentiments after qualifying. The team and driver try everything, but the car just isn’t performing. “It’s like driving on ice.”

Just before the race, I see him crossing the paddock to the pit box from the Red Bull hospitality area: his gaze fixed on the horizon, focused. I briefly wish him luck as he passes by. Despite his focus, it seems to go unnoticed. He takes two more determined steps, but then briefly turns his head. A meaningful look serves as his response, coupled with a dismissive smile. Loosely translated: ‘Thank you, but we all know it’s not going to happen today.’

That turns out to be true. But anyone who thinks he is at his wits’ end after the debacle in Budapest is mistaken: Verstappen remains calm, cool, and always himself. Of course, he’s disappointed, but luckily it’s the summer break. Time to enjoy. “Because I’m on vacation too.” Wonderful, always down-to-earth and realistic.
