A potential transfer of Max Verstappen to Aston Martin was a hot topic during the winter break. Multiple sources claimed that the British racing team tried to lure sponsors with the promise of Verstappen. The collaboration with good friend Fernando Alonso and aerodynamics guru Adrian Newey is undoubtedly appealing, but for now, the Dutchman remains with Red Bull. At least, if we are to believe team boss Christian Horner.
It was a striking rumor: Aston Martin allegedly whispered to potential sponsors that four-time world champion Max Verstappen would sooner or later join the team. After a tumultuous year at Red Bull, a transfer is not unthinkable, although the Dutchman has a contract until 2028. When asked, Aston Martin denied all allegations. However, it is clear that, should Verstappen ever come on the market, the team would be in line to offer him a contract. CEO Lawrence Stroll is willing to open his wallet.
‘Not Credible’
Christian Horner has also seen the exit rumors. The Red Bull team boss claims that he has close ties with Max Verstappen’s camp and that the rumors surrounding Aston Martin are not credible. Such deals are, after all, discussed behind closed doors. “Max (Verstappen) has a very open relationship with the team,” Horner told Goodwood.com. “Everything is discussed openly, as it should be in a partnership.”
“He has made his position within the team very clear,” explained Horner. “And of course, there are discussions behind closed doors. That’s the normal course of business. Every team would show interest in him, precisely because he is such an exceptional talent. You can imagine that he tops everyone’s list.” Regarding the specific rumors about Aston Martin, he was succinct. “There was a lot of noise. Usually, when it’s discussed so publicly, it’s less credible. Serious matters are discussed behind the scenes, not in the media.”
