Red Bull Racing has lost yet another key figure. This time, the change will primarily affect Max Verstappen, as his lead mechanic, Matt Caller, will be leaving Red Bull after this season. He will be joining the new factory team of Audi/Sauber next year. Several Red Bull technicians, including former Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley, have already made the move.

Caller, who has only been Verstappen’s lead mechanic since early 2024, will receive a significant promotion at Audi/Sauber; starting from 2026, he will serve as the chief mechanic. He joins a growing list of former Red Bull employees who have found their way to Hinwil. Since April, former Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley has been in charge there. As team boss, the Brit has already achieved significant successes, including the first podium for Formula 1 veteran Nico Hülkenberg.

It’s no secret that Audi is steadily attracting people from the top teams to set up its factory team from 2026 onwards. According to sources from The Race, Caller will remain with Verstappen and Red Bull until the end of this season before packing his bags. An interesting detail: Matt is not the only Caller in the Red Bull garage. His twin brother Jon is the lead mechanic for Yuki Tsunoda. Whether he will also make the move in the future remains to be seen. However, the connection between the brothers makes Matt’s departure particularly notable.
