Max Verstappen has indicated that the upcoming Grand Prix races are of great importance for his future at Red Bull. On the eve of the Emilia-Romagna GP, and the start of a new triple header, several crucial upgrades must prove that the Austrian racing stable can still be competitive. Verstappen, who has been racing for the Milton Keynes team since 2016, leaves the door ajar for a possible departure.

Rumours have been circulating for some time that Verstappen could leave Red Bull, partly due to internal tensions within the team in 2024 and a slump in form compared to reigning world champion McLaren. While Red Bull was often dominant in previous years, the team seems to be struggling to keep up with McLaren this season. Verstappen only achieved one victory in the first six Grand Prix races of the season. His father, Jos Verstappen, previously stated that the upcoming triple header will determine whether the Dutchman can defend his title this year.

His future success in Formula 1 is, of course, also influenced by the new regulations of 2026. “It’s a bit difficult to estimate,” Verstappen told De Telegraaf. “Next year everything in the sport will be new again. And everyone can say they know who has the best papers, but no one knows for sure.” The most drastic changes are the adjustments to the powertrain. The power will soon be evenly distributed between a battery and an internal combustion engine. “The cars and engines are changing next year, but if you maintain such an advantage with the tires, that’s significant,” he referred to McLaren. “That will be the same next year.”

Upcoming Races are Crucial

A move to the papayas seems unlikely – both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have long-term contracts. Verstappen himself has a contract until 2028, but due to special performance clauses, the actual duration is uncertain. “I always think about my future, even in the good years,” Verstappen assured. “On the other hand, I am quite calm about it at the moment.”

When asked if he wants to stay with Red Bull, Verstappen responded: “I have always told the team that. That’s the intention. Unless something really strange happens. But leaving is not the intention at the moment.” Yet, the three-time world champion left room for doubt. “I want to see how the rest of the season, or at least part of it, goes,” he concluded. “The team can make big, good steps. The upcoming races are very important, also for my future. I’m not even talking about next year, but in general. I think everyone on the team realizes that.”
