Gianpiero Lambiase has been Max Verstappen‘s dedicated race engineer for many years. The 45-year-old Briton is perhaps the Dutchman’s most important confidant within Red Bull. He also provided Verstappen with updates and strategies during the final race in Abu Dhabi, although a dominant victory was not enough for a fifth world title. Various media outlets report that Lambiase – after a tumultuous year – may be given a new role within the team.
Following the GP of Abu Dhabi, Gianpiero Lambiase was visibly emotional. With tears in his eyes, he listened to Verstappen’s final radio messages. According to the team, his reaction was related to personal circumstances; it had been a tough year for the top engineer, who had to miss the race weekends in Austria and Belgium due to his personal situation. Simon Rennie temporarily took over his duties during that time.
Multiple sources indicate that it is not yet certain what role Lambiase will have next season. Due to his personal situation, Red Bull wants to consider what would be desirable during the winter. If the team finds a new permanent race engineer for Verstappen and successfully establishes a new structure, Lambiase might be able to step back from his current position. However, he would remain active within the team, possibly in a higher technical role at the circuit.
Verstappen Praises Lambiase
Max Verstappen explained after the race how heavily the season has impacted his right hand. He was asked about the emotional reaction of Lambiase. “It was an emotional year,” responded the Dutchman. “I don’t want to elaborate too much, but it was tough. At the same time, I am very happy to be able to work with someone who is so passionate. Of course, he is my race engineer, but I also see him as a friend. We have experienced so many emotional moments together and delivered fantastic performances.”
“I’m sure he was a bit emotional after the flag,” Verstappen continued. “I am really looking forward to seeing him again, because this year has not always been easy for him. I am simply incredibly proud to be able to work with someone who is so good. A real example of someone who never gave up this season, even in difficult times.”
