Following an impressive performance in Azerbaijan, Max Verstappen appears to be re-entering the title race. The Dutchman is still 69 points behind World Championship leader Oscar Piastri, but with seven races and three sprint races remaining, anything is possible. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc acknowledges the Red Bull driver’s progress, but questions whether it will be enough to secure the title.

The four-time world champion dominated on the Baku street circuit, securing both pole position and victory. In contrast, the weekend was decidedly challenging for McLaren. Championship leader Oscar Piastri crashed during Saturday’s qualifying and again in the opening round of the race the following day. Lando Norris could not advance beyond seventh place on Sunday. Following his dominant victories in Monza and Baku, Verstappen is gradually closing the gap on the McLaren duo in the championship. However, the points difference remains substantial.

Leclerc’s Doubts

Charles Leclerc was impressed by Verstappen’s performance. “I really don’t think Max is leaving anything on the table, I’m sure of that,” the Monegasque said after the weekend in Baku. “They’ve clearly made a step with that car and are now really at a very high level.” However, he does not expect Red Bull to dominate the upcoming races. “It’s close between McLaren and Red Bull. The last two weekends were not really strong for McLaren, but I don’t think Red Bull will dominate again.”

Regarding Verstappen’s personal form, Leclerc is full of praise. “I think Max is doing an amazing job at the moment. Hats off to him.” But on the subject of the title race, he is clear: “I would really be surprised if Max becomes champion. It’s going to be either Oscar or Lando this year.”
