Max Verstappen claimed victory in the sprint race at the Circuit of the Americas, in a race filled with incidents. The Dutchman crossed the finish line first, while McLaren lost both cars in the opening round. Carlos Sainz surprisingly drove to a third-place finish in the Williams, keeping both Ferraris behind him.
The race began with chaos in turn 1, when Oscar Piastri was clipped by Nico Hülkenberg and subsequently collided with teammate Lando Norris. The damage resulted in both McLarens retiring from the race. This allowed Max Verstappen to score more points than initially anticipated. Carlos Sainz drove an impressive race in the special retro-livery of Williams and managed to keep Lewis Hamilton (P4) and Charles Leclerc (P5) behind him. Yuki Tsunoda made a strong comeback from P18 to P7, earning two crucial championship points. In the closing stages, a crash between Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon led to a neutralization, after which the race ended behind the safety car.
