Rumours of a potential move by Max Verstappen to Mercedes in 2026 are gaining momentum. During the recent race weekends in Spielberg and Silverstone, this possible blockbuster transfer was already a topic of discussion. Mercedes executive Ola Källenius is said to have given the ‘green light’ internally to sign the Dutchman – even if it involves a massive buyout fee.
Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but could be bought out via an exit clause. According to the renowned Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the amount is a whopping 102 million euros. A huge sum of money, but for a Formula 1 powerhouse like Mercedes, this does not seem to be an insurmountable hurdle. Moreover, there is said to be a desire within the Verstappen camp to leave Red Bull, according to paddock chatter. Allegedly, they lack confidence in the current competitiveness and the car being developed for 2026.
The Italian media further reports that Mercedes boss Ola Källenius has already approved the pursuit of Max Verstappen. The Brackley-based team is reportedly willing to dig deep into their pockets for the four-time world champion. Since the departure of Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes has been in search of a new lead driver, and they see Verstappen as the ideal candidate to once again compete for the world title. It is rumored that George Russell – who has yet to sign a new contract – will have to make way. Team boss Toto Wolff views his protégé Kimi Antonelli as the champion of the future and wants to keep the young Italian within the ranks.
