“Yes!” exclaimed Max Verstappen jubilantly over the team radio. By securing pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the four-time world champion delivered a true tour de force on Saturday afternoon, likely to his own surprise as well. “Simply lovely,” he said a moment later over the radio. It had been a while since he last expressed such sentiment.

“The last lap was good enough,” Verstappen said with a touch of understatement during an interview on the grid with former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer. “It was very difficult with the changing wind. The cars are very sensitive and on this circuit, you have to go all out. That worked out well. Our car is fast on the straights, but it’s harder to manage in the fast corners.”

Verstappen looked ahead to tomorrow’s race with considerable confidence. He will start from pole, with Oscar Piastri beside him on the front row. Lando Norris and George Russell occupy the second row.

“We’ll see what it’s worth. I’m looking forward to it. It’s hard to say whether we can compete in terms of speed with the McLarens, but we’re certainly going to try,” said Verstappen.
