If Max Verstappen takes another new step beyond Formula 1 and GT racing, it certainly won’t be IndyCar. Reflecting on his adventure on the Nordschleife, the Dutchman in Baku says he has no interest in the American racing class. “Only to watch.”
Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Verstappen’s acquired license in Germany is still the talk of the day. He could combine GT racing with Formula 1, but whether that will also happen in the form of a 24-hour race, for example? “It depends on the calendar,” Verstappen knows. “And the busyness. So it’s not predictable yet. Take next year, a busy year due to the new regulations in Formula 1. Is it then combinable? That’s hard to say. Just like what I do in five or ten years.”
What he definitely won’t do, he says, is go for the so-called Triple Crown. That is winning the GP of Monaco, the 24 hours of Le Mans, and the Indy 500. He already did the first, the second could therefore be possible through a new racing adventure. But the third is where it falls short. Verstappen has no desire to race in IndyCar, he makes clear. “I really like IndyCar, but mainly to watch. I enjoy doing that. But to drive in it? I have no interest in that.”
So first, the focus is on Formula 1 and GT racing. Who knows what that will lead to, such as participation in Le Mans. The reigning world champion looks back once more on his adventure in Germany in the paddock in Baku. “It was a great weekend, I’m glad I made it. The organization was great, the driving went well.” And was he worried? Laughing: “No, luckily I was not involved in a crash or causing a yellow flag.”
