Max Verstappen is content with his second-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix, behind winner George Russell. “We got the maximum out of it,” he said in an initial reaction. However, the fact that the car did not perform as expected raises questions for him.
Verstappen’s decision to start on soft tyres was a gamble. “We were on the ‘dirty’ side of the starting grid. Well, sometimes you have to try something different. Otherwise, you know after turn 1 that you’re staying where you are. But alas, it didn’t quite work out as we hoped.”
The first stint was about survival, Verstappen continued. “You want to drive as long as possible before coming in for the hard tyre. After that, it was a tough race, we struggled for various reasons. We need to figure out why.”
So, in Singapore, P2 was the best Verstappen could do. “Overtaking would also be difficult here even if I had been faster,” he knew. “So ultimately, this is the maximum for us.”
