Max Verstappen has reportedly had a positive first impression of Laurent Mekies, the new team boss of Red Bull Racing. “I’ve spoken to him several times over the past few weeks,” Verstappen shares in Spa, in the lead-up to the Belgian Grand Prix.
The race in the Ardennes will be the first without Christian Horner, who was dismissed earlier this month. Red Bull’s leadership had lost faith in the Brit and showed him the door. Mekies was chosen to take over. What can the Frenchman, who comes from sister team Racing Bulls, accomplish with his new team? Verstappen: “Only time will tell.”
The Dutchman continues: “There’s not much to say about it right now. We’ve been working together for two weeks and we haven’t driven during that time. So not everything will suddenly be better. But we’re certainly going to try to improve.”
His first impression of Mekies is good. “I like Laurent, I get along well with him and he’s a very smart guy. He’s also been active in various areas of Formula 1 (from teams like Ferrari and Racing Bulls to work for the FIA).”
