After McLaren scored another one-two finish at the British GP, Max Verstappen‘s chances for the title seem slimmer than ever. The gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri is a whopping 69 points ahead of the Belgian GP. Yet, former world champion and British driver Jenson Button still sees something special in Verstappen. Although Formula 1 has produced many great drivers over the years, he believes none are as complete as the Dutchman.
“I’m probably going to get flayed for this, but I think Max Verstappen is currently the best driver,” Jenson Button said in a radio interview with Radio X. The former world champion was then asked who he would place second. “I think Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are tied for second place,” he replied seriously. “Although they are two very different characters.”
“Norris can sometimes be his own worst enemy; as soon as he makes a small mistake, it haunts him,” Button explained. “As for Piastri – he’s just very down-to-earth. He just wants to race and be very fast, and he does that incredibly well.” Finally, the Brit emphasized once again why no one comes close to Max. “He (Verstappen) is simply the most complete Formula 1 driver ever,” Button praised the Dutchman. “Of course, he hasn’t won as many titles as a Hamilton, but where Hamilton is an extremely good driver, Verstappen sometimes does things that really no one else can.”
