A move for Max Verstappen to Mercedes appears to be drawing closer, as was evident during the race weekend in Austria. George Russell sparked conversation when he reported that talks were taking place between the German racing team and the celebrated world champion. The Brit himself is still waiting for a contract extension at Mercedes. Team boss Toto Wolff promises to provide clarity soon about the future of the Silberpfeile – and thereby Verstappen’s future.

During the official FIA press conference on Friday, Toto Wolff was naturally confronted with Russell’s statements and the rumors about a collaboration with Verstappen. The Mercedes executive remained non-committal, but refused to confirm that the current line-up – which he regularly praises in the media – will also drive for the team next year. “This is a subject I do not want to talk about,” the Austrian stated firmly. “People talk and explore their options, but the most important thing is that we remain transparent. These rumors do not change my opinion about Russell, his capabilities, or anything else.”

Eye on the Summer Break

After the race, Wolff delved a little deeper into the future driver duo, without explicitly mentioning Verstappen. “You have to deal respectfully with all parties involved,” he responded to the media in Spielberg. “The organization, the drivers, everyone. You have to understand how you want to proceed.” The question is when he will actually make a decision and secure drivers.”

“I don’t want to be sadistic by making a driver wait,” Wolff explained. “Let alone not making a decision when it should be made. So I think we’re in a good position. We’re in June. Of course, there are many discussions going on, but I’ve always been open and transparent about that. And at some point in the coming months – before the summer break – we should have it sorted out. Everything will be settled during the summer break.” Does Wolff hope to establish a collaboration with Max Verstappen before that time? Or has a signature already been placed? Only time will tell.

Will Toto Wolff succeed in securing Max Verstappen for Mercedes?
