Helmut Marko reflects with pride on Red Bull’s first world title fifteen years ago in 2010, but also sees clear parallels with the current title fight. According to the 82-year-old Red Bull advisor, Max Verstappen could benefit from a similar situation this year – especially now that rival McLaren is letting its drivers compete freely.

“It’s incredible that it’s already been fifteen years,” Marko tells Sport Krone. “That success was particularly important for the entire team. Each world title has its own story, but the decisive factor at the time was, of course, the drivers’ championship.” The Austrian refers to the thrilling end of the 2010 season when Sebastian Vettel clinched the title in Abu Dhabi despite being fifteen points behind. “Back then, he was still behind Alonso and Webber when we went to Abu Dhabi,” Marko recalls. “In the end, Sebastian was the one who benefited the most in Abu Dhabi. I hope for a similar scenario this year.”

Red Bull Sees Opportunities

Despite Red Bull’s recent missteps, Marko remains optimistic about Verstappen’s chances. “Although things didn’t go perfectly in Singapore and recently in Mexico, we still gained points on the respective leaders,” he emphasizes. Verstappen finished both weekends in second and third place. “And now comes Brazil,” Marko continues. “Last year, we made a significant move towards the title there. Hopefully, we can repeat that.”

The Austrian also sees an interesting element in the competition. “As far as I understand, McLaren is letting both drivers race freely until the end,” says Marko. “That could potentially motivate Oscar Piastri to fight back – and that could ultimately work in our favor.” With four Grands Prix and two sprint races to go, it’s far from decided who will take home the world championship.
