The Formula 1 circus is in Mexico City this weekend for the eponymous Grand Prix. Mexican fans will have to do without their home hero this edition; Sergio Pérez is absent from the grid this year. He will only make his return in 2026 with the new Cadillac team. Nevertheless, he is closely following the current Formula 1 season. Pérez is rooting for former teammate Max Verstappen to win the championship: “He deserves the title the most.”
Max Verstappen has made significant progress in the championship in recent weeks. In the run-up to the Mexican GP, he is only forty points behind World Championship leader Oscar Piastri. The reigning world champion has five more Grand Prix – and two sprint races – to defend his title.
‘Verstappen deserves the title the most’
In the meantime, Sergio Pérez is waiting for his chance to rejoin Verstappen on the grid. The 35-year-old driver was Verstappen’s teammate for four years, but was let go by Red Bull in 2024 after a disappointing season. However, he will return next year with the new Formula 1 team from Cadillac. Soon, Checo will be driving his first test laps on behalf of the Americans, albeit in a Ferrari car.
During a charity football match in Mexico City, Pérez was asked about his view on the current Formula 1 season and Max Verstappen’s chances of winning the title. The six-time race winner immediately expressed his support for his former teammate. “I think Max has a good chance,” said Pérez. “He is without a doubt the driver who deserves the title the most,” he added.
