From 2026, Red Bull will develop its own Formula 1 engine in collaboration with Ford. This is a monumental challenge, especially considering the new technical guidelines that will be implemented next year. Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies and Ford CEO Jim Farley emphasize the contribution of four-time world champion Max Verstappen. According to them, the Dutchman plays a central role in the new partnership.
In the run-up to the 2026 regulations, Red Bull Powertrains joined forces with Ford. The American automotive giant will supply power units for both the main team and sister team Racing Bulls. Honda, the current supplier, is swapping the Austrians for Lawrence Stroll’s Aston Martin after an extremely successful collaboration. Laurent Mekies previously compared developing an engine to ‘climbing Mount Everest’ and is therefore extra grateful for Verstappen’s expertise.
Verstappen’s Key Role at Red Bull
“Max (Verstappen) does much more than just ask for the numbers,” Mekies told Sky Sports. “It would really surprise you. Even outside the car, he makes a significant contribution to various projects. Of course, he’s curious about the latest data, but he also tests in the simulator and works closely with the engineers. He wants to understand how we’re developing the cars for 2026; where we’re getting the power from, how we’re generating downforce? He truly plays a central role in this project. Naturally, he wants a fast car next year, and he’s doing everything he can to help us build it.”
“Talking with Verstappen has given us at Ford even more respect for him,” added Jim Farley. “Especially since we’ve seen him drive this year. The way he creates stability in an environment where everyone is just trying to do their job is impressive. That’s one of the most beautiful things about Laurent (Mekies) and Red Bull – everyone is so incredibly dedicated to the whole.”
