Max Verstappen has expressed his desire to compete against Fernando Alonso for the championship title in 2026, a year that will see drastic changes in the regulations within the premier class of racing. Although the world champion admits that it is still uncertain how Formula 1 – and thus the vehicles of teams Red Bull and Aston Martin – will fare next season, Verstappen has immense respect for ‘fighter’ Alonso. “I hope to be able to do the same as him for a long time,” reveals Verstappen.
Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso not only share six world titles between them, but also a deep mutual respect. The Dutch driver has previously named the Spaniard as his favourite driver on the current grid to watch – “He’s such a fighter,” Verstappen praised his Spanish colleague – and Alonso, in turn, called Verstappen “simply the best driver” during the British Grand Prix.”Verstappen shared with Mundo Deportivo his admiration for Alonso’s fighting spirit. “In that respect, I think I’m the same as Fernando,” the four-time world champion candidly stated. “He doesn’t have a car that can win the championship, but he never gives up. He always remains a fighter, and that’s something I admire in him.”
For the Dutchman, the experienced Spaniard is therefore an inspiration. “He’s 44 years old and still incredibly motivated, still driven by what he does. He continues with so much passion, even when things aren’t going well. I hope to do the same for a long time: always wanting more, always trying to get the best out of yourself.”
Title Battle with Alonso?
This has led Verstappen to secretly dream of battling Alonso for the title in 2026 – when the regulations in Formula 1 will be overhauled. “That would be amazing!” the world champion responded enthusiastically to the idea. “Battling for a world title against Alonso would be fantastic. I have a lot of respect for Fernando, as he is a great champion. I would love it, but at this moment it’s very hard to say what the state of Formula 1 will be in 2026.”
