Richard Verschoor suffered a setback in his fight for the F2 title in Azerbaijan. The Dutchman, who finished sixth in Saturday’s sprint race, ended up ninth in Sunday’s main race. Although he gained two places from his starting position, his championship rivals finished ahead of him.

Jack Crawford won the main race on Sunday morning on the streets of Baku. With his fourth victory of the season, he now has 169 points, slightly closing the gap on leader Leonardo Fornaroli. Fornaroli finished fifth due to a time penalty, but still leads the championship with 188 points. Behind the pair, Luke Browning, who dropped out on Sunday, is third (161), and Verschoor is fourth (149). There are still two race weekends to go in Formula 2: Qatar (end of November) and Abu Dhabi (beginning of December). Therefore, dozens of points are still up for grabs.

Verschoor and Van Hoepen

Verschoor, who finished sixth in Saturday’s sprint race, started eleventh in the F2 main race on Sunday morning. The Dutchman managed to finish two places higher, ending up ninth behind Rafael Villagomez, who secured an eighth place for Van Amersfoort Racing. Joshua Dürksen and Dino Beganovic fared better; they joined Crawford as the second and third place finishers on the podium in Baku.

Laurens van Hoepen opted for an alternative strategy. The Formula 2 debutant, who competed in Formula 3 earlier this season, started the main race from the back of the field and was therefore able to take a gamble. Unfortunately, this did not pay off with a surprise result. However, it is clear that Van Hoepen will also be active in F2 next year – the team he will be racing for, however, is still in question.
