Dutch IndyCar driver Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout made significant progress at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. Initially qualifying twenty-fourth for the so-called Sonsio Grand Prix, he managed to finish ninth after an impressive comeback. This result placed Van Kalmthout – following a fourth-place finish at Barber Motorsports Park – once again in the points for Dale Coyne Racing. The race was won by defending champion Alex Palou.
After a disappointing qualification, Van Kalmthout had to stage a comeback. He successfully managed to climb from the twenty-fourth starting position to the top ten. With his ninth-place finish, he once again scored points for Dale Coyne Racing, the team that was able to guarantee him an IndyCar seat at the last minute this year. The Sonsio Grand Prix was won by Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing. The Spaniard secured his fourth victory of the season with this win, further extending his lead in the championship.”I had a great time,” an enthusiastic Van Kalmthout responded after the race. “There was little grip on the track – I was sliding all over – but for a while, I even had the fastest lap time. The car felt very good, especially compared to the qualification. We made significant adjustments in preparation for the race, and it clearly paid off. We were fast, we were really very fast,” he concluded satisfactorily. After five races, Van Kalmthout is in tenth place in the championship.
Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout was at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama last week.
