This weekend, Laurens van Hoepen will make his debut in Formula 2 during the race weekend in Azerbaijan. The Dutch driver, who earlier this year drove in Formula 3 with ART Grand Prix, is replacing Sami Meguetounif on the Trident Motorsport team. The second Trident vehicle will be driven by Norwegian Martinius Stenshorne, who also previously competed in Formula 3. This will be the first appearance in Formula 2 for both drivers, and it will take place on the challenging street circuit of Baku.
“I’m looking forward to making my debut in Formula 2 with Trident Motorsport,” says Van Hoepen. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to take the next step on such a technical and spectacular track as Baku. It will be a valuable experience that I can build on for the future.” The Dutchman finished twelfth in the Formula 3 championship. He scored 60 points and stood on the podium twice after finishing third in the sprint races in Monaco and Italy.
This means that there will be two Dutch drivers starting in Azerbaijan. In addition to the debuting Van Hoepen, Richard Verschoor hopes to get his title chances back on track. Verschoor is currently 30 points behind championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli.
