Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver in Austria to be lapped twice by race winner Lando Norris. The Japanese driver failed to advance beyond Q1 in the qualifying round and finished the race the following day in last place among the remaining drivers. All in all, it was another disappointing race weekend for the Red Bull driver, who is now at his wits’ end. “I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong anymore,” a visibly upset Tsunoda lamented.
While his teammate Max Verstappen‘s race was over in the opening round due to a collision with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Yuki Tsunoda managed to cross the finish line. However, the result was the same, as the Japanese driver finished in sixteenth place, the last spot. This was partly due to an incident with Franco Colapinto earlier in the race. Tsunoda tried to overtake the Argentine, but braked too late and hit the Alpine driver’s car. The Red Bull driver received a ten-second time penalty for the incident.
“The overtaking move on Franco was also unnecessary,” a visibly upset Tsunoda admitted to F1TV after the race. “That was a bad move on my part. But the pace was also quite poor. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong anymore. To be honest, it’s so hard to figure out what I’m doing wrong.” Tsunoda’s sixteenth place combined with Verstappen’s retirement means that Red Bull leaves their home race with zero World Championship points.
Silverstone
The Japanese driver even seems to have given up hope that his string of disappointing Grands Prix will end in Silverstone. “We will investigate further,” Tsunoda continues. “I need to try something new. Maybe a different driving style, maybe I can learn from what Max does differently than me. I will do my best, and will continue to improve.”
