Yuki Tsunoda finished sixth in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday. This marked a long-awaited return to the points for the Japanese driver, who has notably struggled with his Red Bull in recent months. Rumours suggest he may be replaced by Racing Bulls sensation Isack Hadjar next year. Meanwhile, Tsunoda is keen to prove that he can still be a valuable team player for the Austrians – and for Max Verstappen.

“I enjoyed it,” responded Yuki Tsunoda, who wore a smile for the first time in a long while. “The second stint was a bit tougher, especially with a McLaren breathing down my neck,” he referred to Lando Norris, who crossed the finish line in seventh place. “At that moment, I was only thinking about the championship, both the constructors’ and the drivers’ title; for Max (Verstappen, ed.) of course.” The Dutchman won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and is becoming an increasingly significant threat to Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Boosted Self-Confidence

“I had plenty of opportunities to dive inside and attack Liam Lawson, but the risk of Norris also getting involved was too high. As Red Bull, you don’t want that. On the other hand, I also lacked the pace to make a good overtaking move.” Nevertheless, Tsunoda finished in a solid sixth place, his best result ever for Red Bull. “Of course, that boosts my self-confidence,” the Japanese driver assured. “I think we’ve made some crucial adjustments to the car, and I’ve also improved my own long runs.”

Tsunoda’s future within Red Bull and Formula 1 has been under discussion in recent weeks. Multiple sources reported that the promotion of Racing Bulls’ sensation Isack Hadjar has already been confirmed. If the young Parisian moves up to the main team next year, Tsunoda could be left without a seat. The sister team, on the other hand, is counting on the arrival of Formula 2 talent Arvid Lindblad. With performances like the one in Baku, Tsunoda might still be able to secure his spot with the Austrians.
