Thierry Boutsen will be present in Imola this weekend to recreate his iconic push finish from 1985 with his Arrows ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Naturally, he also closely follows the current state of Formula 1. The Belgian has high praise for four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

“Without a doubt, he is one of the best drivers, but even Max can’t achieve anything without a good car,” he says.

Boutsen continues, “This is quite different from how it used to be. In my time, the result was seventy percent due to the driver and thirty percent due to the car. Now, that ratio has become 20-80. The car is the determining factor.”

“I see it like this: there is so much electronics in the cars these days that control everything. Even the lesser drivers can now be fast, because if they go over the limit, the car controls it. In my time, you would be out immediately,” concludes Thierry Boutsen.
