Former Formula 1 team boss Günther Steiner recently announced that he will become the CEO of Tech3, a team in the MotoGP. The eccentric Steiner emphasized the growth potential of the sport now that MotoGP has been taken over by Liberty Media. The American media giant, which also owns Formula 1, has made the sport immensely popular and lucrative. Reportedly, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are now also in the running for a stake in a MotoGP racing team.
Prior to the MotoGP Grand Prix of Catalonia, Günther Steiner announced that he will become the new CEO of the Red Bull KTM Tech3 team. “I am pleased to have beaten the other rivals in this race,” he declared during a press conference. “This racing class is growing and the arrival of Liberty Media is a very important step. They want this to work and they are going to invest a lot to make it happen. They already have a lot of experience from the expansions they have carried out in Formula 1.”
Verstappen and Hamilton to MotoGP?
According to Autosport, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are now also interested in taking over a MotoGP team. Hamilton has had a long-standing interest, fueled by his passion for motorcycles and the expected business growth in MotoGP. The British medium spoke to Raymond Vermeulen, the manager of Max Verstappen, about possibly joining Formula 1. The camp of the Dutch Formula 1 driver has no concrete plans for the time being.
Max Verstappen: A Passionate Racing Enthusiast
“Max (Verstappen) is a great racing enthusiast,” emphasized Vermeulen. “He and his Verstappen.com team are deeply involved in the GT3 classes. It’s no secret that he’s also interested in MotoGP, but considering buying a team is not a realistic goal at this moment. Everything has to fall perfectly into place, and the chances of that happening soon are minimal.”
Hamilton and Verstappen: Limited Options in MotoGP
Of course, both Hamilton and Verstappen can no longer approach Tech3. The five factory teams, namely Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia, are not for sale either. This leaves four independent teams remaining. Given recent ties with Yamaha, a deal with Pramac seems most likely, although Autosport reports that Verstappen has also been in contact with LCR.
