Max Verstappen was recently blamed for the poor ticket sales for the Grand Prix in Great Britain; the circuit boss of Silverstone believed that the Dutchman’s dominance caused the English audience to lose interest in the event. However, according to SafeBettingSites, the real culprit is the ticket prices.

Research has shown that ticket prices have increased by an average of 123 percent compared to 2019. In less than five years, the average cost of a ticket has more than doubled! In 2019, a weekend ticket cost 180 pounds (approximately 215 euros), while the same ticket now costs 350 pounds (nearly 415 euros). The Friday ticket takes the cake – it cost 60 euros in 2019, while now you have to shell out over 160 euros.

This explains why Silverstone had trouble with ticket sales in recent months. However, in the last few weeks, tickets have been flying off the shelves – the exciting battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris apparently paid off.

The ‘Biggest Event on the Calendar’

Home heroes Lewis Hamilton and George Russell understand the increase in ticket prices, but are disappointed to see some fans being excluded as a result. “Silverstone is bigger than all the other races on the calendar,” Russell said in the run-up to his home race. “It has become more of a four-day festival, so I understand that costs are going up. But it should not become unaffordable for the fans.”

“They really need to do something about the ticket prices,” Hamilton added. “Combined with the rising cost of living, the tickets are just too expensive. Imagine wanting to come and watch with your family – it’s just extremely pricey. I think they really need to start thinking about cheaper alternatives.”

According to SafeBettingSites, the price increases for the different tickets are as follows:

  • Friday ticket: Increased by 178 percent
  • Saturday ticket: Increased by 99 percent
  • Sunday ticket: Increased by 121 percent
  • Weekend ticket: Increased by 94 percent
