David Croft, the renowned commentator for British Sky Sports, has responded to the criticism the platform has been facing. Croft was recently accused again of ‘nationalistic’ reporting and favoring British drivers. Max Verstappen, in particular, is said to be the victim of these biased broadcasts. However, Croft insists that they always strive to remain impartial.

Adrian Newey stirred up controversy last week by suggesting that Max Verstappen sometimes falls victim to the ‘nationalistic’ British reporting. According to the designer, Sky Sports is particularly guilty of favoring their ‘own’ drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. Verstappen is said to be ‘demonized’ in the process.

Everyone Has Their Prejudices

“I will always try to follow ‘the story’,” Croft defended himself in a conversation with Speedcafe. “In Formula 1, this is not always easy, as many different stories emerge during the race. You also have to respond to the images – you can only react to what the director broadcasts. In doing so, I try to be as impartial as possible. This is sometimes difficult to prove, because in the end, everyone watches with a certain preference.”

“Everyone has their own prejudices and perceptions of a comment or statement someone makes,” Croft explained. “If you sometimes try to be neutral, someone can interpret that in a completely different way. Do I get more excited when a British driver wins? Maybe, but I don’t know, because I’m in the moment. Do I get more excited when it’s been an exciting race? Yes. Do I get excited, no matter who wins? I try to.”

Sky Sports has been accused several times this season of having a preference for Lando Norris. Since the Englishman can challenge title holder Max Verstappen for the championship, British reporting seems more colored. In 2021, when Lewis Hamilton narrowly lost the title to Max Verstappen, the medium received similar criticism. Croft was then said to have shouted that Hamilton was ‘robbed’ of the win.
