Overcoming Overtaking Challenges on the Narrow Circuit
Singapore is one of the narrowest and most technical circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. The lack of significant power differences and the numerous turns often result in drivers following each other in a long line, with limited opportunities to overtake their predecessor. In such conditions, drivers like Max Verstappen often stand out due to their aggressive driving and strategic prowess.
Introduction of a Fourth DRS Zone in 2022
In an attempt to address a persistent issue, a third DRS zone was added in 2022. However, this did not yield the desired results, prompting the FIA to take a step further by introducing a fourth DRS zone. This additional DRS zone, located between turns 14 and 16, is expected to provide drivers with more opportunities to compete for position.
Modifications to the Circuit
Beyond the new DRS zone, the circuit has undergone significant changes over the past few years. Last year, the layout was altered, reducing the track length from 5,063 meters to 4,940 meters. The most substantial change was implemented in the final sector, where turns 16 and 19 were replaced with a straight 400-meter stretch. This modification reduced the number of turns from 23 to 19, which could potentially enhance overtaking opportunities. Certain sections of the circuit have also been resurfaced, which could provide more grip and potentially faster lap times. For instance, drivers like Max Verstappen could leverage these modifications to deliver even more thrilling performances.
