After three years with Mercedes, Simracer Jarno Opmeer is making the switch to Red Bull, the team announced on Wednesday. The 24-year-old Dutchman has signed a multi-year contract with Max Verstappen’s team. Opmeer, who has a background in open-wheel racing, chose the world of Esports in 2019. He has already won two world championships.
Within the Red Bull Esports team, Jarno Opmeer will be joining rival Frederik Rasmussen, the current simracing champion. Opmeer is transferring from the Mercedes team, with which he won the championship in 2021. “I can’t wait to get started with Red Bull,” the Dordrecht native responded. “I will also be present at the Dutch GP this weekend, so it promises to be a fantastic first week. I’m looking forward to what the future brings.”
Jarno Opmeer started karting at the age of four and became the Dutch champion three times in a row. Later, he joined Formula 4 with the Dutch MP Motorsport, before becoming part of the Renault training team. In 2019, he chose the simulator and signed a contract with the French team’s Esports team. In 2020, he won the title with Alfa Romeo before making the switch to Mercedes.
