Former Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez is frequently linked to a collaboration with the new Cadillac team. The Mexican’s contract was terminated last year, leaving the 35-year-old driver without a seat. Now that Cadillac is looking for experienced drivers, the six-time Grand Prix winner is an interesting candidate. Max Verstappen, who formed a team with Pérez for four years, wishes his former colleague a new opportunity in Formula 1.
During the race weekend at Silverstone, Verstappen was asked about the rumors of a possible collaboration between Pérez and Cadillac. The reigning champion explained why he thinks the Mexican would be a good choice for the American team. “Yes, he is definitely a good option,” Verstappen confirmed. “Checo has always been very strong. Of course, he had a few difficult moments with us, but they never dominated.”
‘As long as he is motivated’
In his last season with Red Bull, Pérez performed disappointingly, to say the least. Of the 589 World Championship points that the team eventually collected, only 152 were credited to the Mexican. “I always got along well with Checo,” Verstappen continued. “As long as he is motivated to race, I think he – especially for a new team – is a very good choice. If you look at how he performed at Force India and Racing Point; he always scored good points there.” Verstappen finally indicated that he currently has no contact with Pérez about his future in Formula 1.
Several British media reported that Mercedes reserve and ten-time Grand Prix winner Valtteri Bottas is the favorite for a seat at Cadillac. The Finn is a supporting force at Mercedes this season, but is now also known for his humorous videos on social media. He recently posted a video of himself in a Cadillac. “Not yet,” he said with a wink.
