Carlos Sainz understands why Ferrari announced the contract extension of team boss Frédéric Vasseur before the summer break. According to the Spaniard, it’s a common practice at Scuderia to clearly announce whether someone is staying or not, to avoid further rumors. ‘Ferrari wanted to eliminate all the noise,’ concludes Sainz.
After weeks of speculation about Frédéric Vasseur’s future at Ferrari, Scuderia confirmed on Thursday that the Frenchman has signed a multi-year contract extension. Vasseur will continue to work for the Italians for the time being, much to the delight of Charles Leclerc. Carlos Sainz, who was still driving in Ferrari red last year, understands why his former employer announced the news before the summer break.
Noise
“I didn’t even know he needed an extension,” Sainz admits in Hungary. “From the perspective of people outside the racing team, it seems that Ferrari wanted to eliminate all the noise. That’s always the case with Ferrari. There are so many rumors going around that you have to announce that you’re extending a contract or that someone is staying. But I’m happy for Fred, because I’m sure he’ll continue to do great work.”
Sainz worked with the Frenchman for two years until Ferrari replaced the Spaniard with Lewis Hamilton at the beginning of 2025. However, the current Williams driver looks back fondly on his time at Scuderia under Vasseur. “I have a great relationship with Fred,” Sainz has said before. “Of course, we had a rough patch when he didn’t want me anymore and signed Lewis. But we’ve both come to terms with that now. We get along well, and he’s a good team boss.”
