Carlos Sainz achieved an impressive result at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. After a commendable qualification where he secured the second position, the Spaniard kept his cool. He subsequently clinched a well-deserved podium finish in the race. His third place was not only his first podium for Williams, but also a clear signal that he is back in full force.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Sainz reflects on his departure from Ferrari, which he says was amicable. “Ferrari was really happy for me. We parted ways in a beautiful manner last year, and I left many good friends behind,” he shares. Although the Spaniard had to make way for Lewis Hamilton, who made the switch to Ferrari in 2025, Sainz harbors no resentment. “It was just the circumstances. Lewis is a seven-time world champion and wanted to spend his final years at Ferrari. As a result, I had to leave, and that’s how I ended up at Williams.”

The fact that he still maintains good contact with his old team was evident after his recent success in Baku. “When I clinched my first podium for Williams, I received congratulations from everyone at Ferrari. They were all proud and happy. That felt really good.” Sainz does not rule out the possibility of returning to Ferrari in the future. After all, he has achieved many successes and built strong friendships within the Italian racing team, which seems to keep the door open for a potential return.
