Carlos Sainz is increasingly confident about his future at Williams. The Spaniard had to unexpectedly look for a new employer last year, after Ferrari contracted seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. While Sainz initially doubted his choice for the British racing team, he now says he has confidence in the course Williams is taking. The team hopes to make a big comeback with the new regulations.
During the race weekend in Hungary, Sainz spoke openly about his transfer to Williams. The 30-year-old driver hesitated for a long time before choosing a multi-year collaboration with the team. “At the time, Williams was ninth in the world championship,” he recalled to the media in Budapest. “Then I seriously doubted whether Williams was the right choice for my career. Now, a year later, I have much more confidence in that decision.”
‘I came here for 2026’
Sainz reflects on a fluctuating first half of the season. While the four-time race winner was still adjusting to his new environment, teammate Alex Albon brought in the most points. However, Sainz is not worried. He is mainly focused on the long term and the upcoming regulation changes. “I didn’t come to this team for the results of 2025; I came for the potential of ’26, ’27 and ’28,” he emphasized. “I am very satisfied with the progress the team is making and the momentum we are building towards next year.”
The first months within the factory and on the shop floor have further strengthened that confidence. “The more I see what is being done and the more I am involved with the team, the better it looks,” Sainz continued enthusiastically. “At the same time, of course, there are still many things to work on and improve. That’s a long list, but I’m satisfied and staying focused. After all, the results of 2025 will also create momentum for 2026.”
