Carlos Sainz has been appointed the new chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), succeeding Sebastian Vettel. He will be working alongside co-chairman George Russell, among others. The Williams driver is looking forward to taking on his new role.
In addition to a new team, Carlos Sainz will also have a new job in 2025. The Spaniard is succeeding Sebastian Vettel as chairman of the GPDA. The German driver left Formula 1 in 2022 but remained involved with the drivers’ union until last year. In his new role, Sainz will be working with chairman Alex Wurz, Mercedes driver George Russell, and Anastasia Fowle.
“I am passionate about my sport and believe that we drivers have a responsibility to do everything we can to work together with stakeholders to advance the sport in many aspects,” Sainz said in the official announcement of his new role on Instagram. “So I am very happy and proud to contribute by taking on the chairmanship role in the GPDA.”
Halo
The GPDA has existed since the 1960s and has been instrumental in the field of safety in Formula 1. It was the union, under the leadership of Wurz, that played a key role in the introduction of the halo. The device has since saved the lives of several drivers during accidents.
