George Russell is content with securing the third starting position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. After an intense qualifying session, the Englishman only had to concede to polesitter Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. Interestingly, Russell recorded his fastest lap on medium tyres, instead of the new C6 compound.

“We just went for it,” George Russell laughed after the session. While Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen were on the red tyres, he opted for the medium compound in Q3. “We thought: maybe the mediums are fast, and it turned out to be a good choice. Of course, we are now a bit limited for tomorrow,” he admitted, knowing that his rivals still have fresh yellow tyres at their disposal.

“It was worth it to be so close to Piastri today,” Russell assured. “That’s always good. I can be very satisfied with the third place, I couldn’t have done much more today.” Teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is racing his first home race in Imola, was less successful. The young Italian, along with both Ferraris, was eliminated in the second qualifying round.
