The modern Formula 1 driver must be capable of much more than just driving fast laps around a circuit. In the era of social media, they also play a crucial role model for a growing fan base – every statement and every move is under scrutiny. Max Verstappen has previously expressed his frustrations about the artificial online obligations of drivers. Now, rival George Russell is also opening up about his struggles with social media.

Social media has turned every Formula 1 driver – and indeed every top athlete – into a kind of online marketing machine. Nowadays, public image is often just as important in securing and extending contracts and sponsorship deals. In an interview with Motorsport Total, George Russell discussed how he deals with the pressure of the internet. “I think not everything you see on social media is reality,” the Mercedes driver emphasized.

“Everyone tries to show the best version of themselves,” he explained. “If you take a hundred photos, you’ll never publish the one where your eyes are closed – after all, you don’t want to look stupid. And that’s where social media can really be toxic.” Like many other Formula 1 drivers, Russell tries to protect his own privacy as much as possible. “When I’m with my girlfriend, family or friends, there are no cameras and we’re in a private setting,” he explained. “At those moments, I don’t want to be on my phone all the time taking photos for social media.”

At the same time, Russell doesn’t want to come across as too superficial on social media. He is constantly seeking a balance, also because his fans deserve to get an impression of who he really is. “I also want to be authentic,” the Brit emphasized. “Because in the end, it’s the Formula 1 fans that make this sport so special.” He also has a certain responsibility towards his sponsors via social media. “They pay to be part of the teams; we obviously shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds us. Times are changing after all.””Russell emphasized his point by citing former racer Kimi Räikkönen as an example. The eccentric Finn was – partly due to his unique personality – loved by the general public. “Kimi Räikkönen was a unique character,” Russell concluded. “But if he were to come to Formula 1 today at the age of 18, people would be dissatisfied with how quiet he is and the fact that he doesn’t use social media. That’s the challenge we’re grappling with these days.”
