George Russell is one of the few top drivers who has not yet secured a new contract for the upcoming Formula 1 season. This is surprising, given the good results the Mercedes driver has achieved in recent races. With four podium finishes in seven Grand Prix, Russell is looking back on the best season start of his career. At Mercedes, they assure that no spot is being kept open for, for example, Max Verstappen – a new contract for their regular driver is imminent.
Last year, it wasn’t until the Italian Grand Prix that Mercedes secured a new driver. After six months of deliberation, Toto Wolff placed his trust in Kimi Antonelli. During an FIA press conference in Monaco, the Austrian was asked if he wants to wait that long again before offering George Russell a contract. “No, certainly not that long,” he responded immediately.
“Russell and I are very clear with each other – in terms of a contract we are one hundred percent in agreement,” Wolff clarified. “We don’t need to let this drag on much longer, because that’s not how we operate.” Bradley Lord, head of communications at Mercedes, gave a similar answer to Sky Sports. “We are not in a hurry,” he stated. “We also have to manage Russell’s career, as he is currently driving for Mercedes.”
Max Verstappen’s Future?
“Having said that, we know there’s no pressure,” Lord added. “He is fully focused on our performance in this triple header and on improving the car. After that, at an appropriate time, Russell and Wolff will sit down at the table and it won’t be long before a contract is worked out. That is definitely going to happen in the coming weeks and months.”
Experts speculate that Mercedes – despite stern denials from Toto Wolff – still has interest in Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but his future with the Austrians came into question again this season. Reportedly, the competitiveness during the current triple header will be decisive for the Dutchman’s season and his long-term plans within the team.
