Is the long wait for George Russell finally nearing its end? For months, the British driver’s contract situation with his current employer, Mercedes, has been a topic of discussion. However, it seems that Russell’s patience will not be tested much longer. “It’s almost done,” reveals team boss Toto Wolff in Singapore.

When Max Verstappen confirmed just before the summer break that he would be staying with Red Bull, it seemed only a matter of time before George Russell would sign a contract extension with Mercedes. Now, as the Formula 1 has traveled to Singapore for the eighteenth race of the season, the Brit is still waiting for clarity about his future.

However, that seems likely to change very soon. “The contract extension is almost done,” Toto Wolff confirms after the third free practice in Singapore, speaking to Sky Sports. The Austrian is then asked if the confirmation will come in the next few days, hours, or even minutes. “Something like that,” is all Wolff says in response.

Russell Remains Confident

On the Thursday preceding the Singapore GP, Russell himself was asked about the ongoing contract negotiations. “For every driver, in my opinion, there comes a point in your career when you want such matters to be handled properly,” the Brit responded. “Every time you extend a contract, it’s the most important contract of your life. So it must be handled with the utmost care. But there’s nothing to worry about. It will be fine,” concluded Russell, who at that time could not yet give an official confirmation.
