On Saturday, George Russell secured the fourth starting position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, behind the three title contenders. Max Verstappen clinched pole position, followed by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Russell could play a pivotal role in the world championship by outmaneuvering the McLarens during the race. The Briton insists he does not want to interfere in the title fight, but at the same time, he is eager to compete for the top spots.
“My mood is the same as for any other race,” Russell stated after the qualifying round to Sky Sports. “I understand what’s at stake for those three, but I treat it as a regular race.” The question is whether the Briton can compete for the podium spots; that’s where the most points are up for grabs for Verstappen and his rivals. Norris only needs a top-three finish to claim the title, while Verstappen must ensure his rival is kept off the podium.
Aiming for the Podium
“Normally, we don’t have the speed to fight with McLaren,” Russell explained. “But if the first lap ends in the same order as we start, I can’t imagine Max cruising to victory. There could still be opportunities.” The Mercedes driver was asked to what extent he dares to challenge the title candidates in Abu Dhabi, always with the risk of ruining their season. “I treat it like any other race,” Russell assured. “I will never act recklessly, but I also won’t miss any opportunities.”
Therefore, the Briton simply wants to get the best out of his race. “I’m aiming for the podium,” Russell concluded confidently. “I want to end the season on a high note. I don’t care who wins the championship tomorrow, I’m just going to do my own thing. I won’t take any more or fewer risks.”
