With the new Formula 1 season approaching and the FIA’s sweeping regulation changes on the horizon, plenty of questions remain about the pecking order. Which teams will hit the ground running in 2026 and which will miss the mark? Reportedly, Mercedes looks well placed to contest the top spots again this year. Former drivers Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill see George Russell as a potential champion.

In a recent episode of the Stay On Track podcast, Herbert and Hill ventured a prediction for the upcoming Formula 1 season. Expected losers were discussed, as were possible title contenders. “Which team will win?” asked Hill. “I’m backing Mercedes,” Herbert replied. In recent months the German team has repeatedly been put forward as the frontrunner. “That team is working very well right now.”

Russell to become champion?

“Antonelli still needs to become a bit more consistent,” Herbert explained. “That is currently his weak point. George (Russell) has, on the other hand, done a fantastic job. That’s why I’m certain Mercedes will be at the top and will fight for wins and possibly the championship. I predict that Russell will take his first title.”

Hill agreed. “I think you stole my answer,” he joked. “There has already been so much said about the usual suspects,” he said, referring to the obvious title contenders. “But I do have some question marks over Red Bull. I secretly think Mercedes are best placed, and George Russell is the outsider. He has delivered brilliant, consistent performances all year in a car that wasn’t really a winner.” Herbert added: “If the car proves dominant, they also have the right line-up for the fight for the constructors’ title. It could easily be a one-two for Mercedes.”
