George Russell argues that Formula 1 stewards should no longer work on a voluntary basis. Over the past few years, there have been increasing questions about the functioning of the FIA stewards. Inconsistencies in penalties and confusion over guidelines and so-called driving standards have also sparked debate in recent Grands Prix. Following high-level discussions between the stewards and the drivers, Russell reiterates that there should be professional, permanent stewards.

In the wake of the annual meeting between the chairmen of the FIA stewards and the Formula 1 drivers, extensive discussions were held in Qatar about future steward policy. Carlos Sainz suggested that a selection of former drivers with recent racing experience should be given authority. He pointed to the analyses of TV experts, including Karun Chandhok, Anthony Davidson, and Jolyon Palmer, who he believes can accurately judge when someone crosses the line and what penalty is appropriate.

George Russell, chairman of the Formula 1 drivers’ union, was later asked about Sainz’s ideas. “From an analysis perspective, I have a lot of respect for the three former drivers he (Sainz) mentioned,” the Brit responded to the press in Qatar. “I think all three often know exactly what’s going on.” However, Russell sees significant differences between the FIA stewards and TV analysts. “The advantage they have over the stewards is that they don’t feel any pressure,” he explained. “They have the time and don’t have to make a decision on the spot. They also don’t have to strictly adhere to the guidelines that apply to the stewards.”

Appropriate Compensation

“They follow their own vision based on racing experience and knowledge, and that’s what the stewards do, as far as possible, of course,” added Lewis Hamilton. “But the stewards then have to make decisions within the framework of the guidelines. So, these guidelines always need to be correct and clear.” According to the Mercedes driver, this is precisely where the problem lies. “You can’t have guidelines for all circumstances. This leads to consistent stewarding by people with racing experience who assess an incident as it truly is. TV analysts clearly have an advantage here.”

Therefore, Russell advocates for a permanent team of consistent stewards who are also paid. “I’m not necessarily talking about Chandhok, Palmer, and Davidson specifically, although they would undoubtedly do a good job,” he said. “But first, someone will have to dig deep into their pockets to pay the stewards correctly. Consistent stewarding over 24 Grand Prix is ultimately just a job. This is a billion-dollar industry, so we shouldn’t have volunteers with so much power. Someone needs to offer these people a decent salary.”
